Elizabeth marched smartly along the corridor with Jane. All thoughts of the mysterious Viento had vanished from her mind until this point. She wondered if she should share the news with her friend.
After they'd spoken to Jane's father, Elizabeth decided. Once the crisis was taken care of, then she'd share her exciting tale.

"Let's have a look at 'im," Bessie took control instantly, striding across the room to where Orion lay on the bed. Suzy watched nervously, concerned by Orion's pallor. "'Ad a bad fall ..." Bessie murmured, "Bang'd 'is head. Not much I can do, save clean the wound and bandage it, 'til the doctor arrives."

Julia ran over to the bed and took her uncle's hand. She looked back at everyone else, then at Orion, and quietly burst into tears.

Bessie looked down at the little girl with sympathy, then turned back to the others and spoke in an undertone, "Blue, be a dear an' keep an eye on 'er. I'll go an' get some 'ot water an' bandages. Lord Michael, make sure the room don't get too crowded."
Michael nodded, and left the room with Bessie. Suzy walked the few steps to Julia then dropped to her knees behind her and placed her hands on the little girl's shoulders. She could feel them shaking beneath her. She opened her mouth to say something, anything, then closed it again. She remembered when her parents had been ill; nothing anyone said had been any comfort at all.

"M-miss Suzy...momma was like this too. Momma...went away. Is Uncle Orion gonna go away too?" Julia looked up at Suzy pleadingly, tears still spilling down her cheeks.

"I hope not," Suzy replied, trying hard not to cry herself and wishing she could be more comfort to Julia, "I really hope not. But I promise you - we're gonna do ev'rythin' we can fer your Uncle, and he's strong Julia. He ain't goin' anywhere without a fight."

(Shall we just carry on?)
Lord Thomas, Jane and Michael's father, assured them that Orion was welcome to stay until he was well. After Jane had explained what Orion had done for Suzy the previous day, Thomas also insisted that he would foot the doctor's bill.
The doctor himself arrived with Elizabeth's manservant a quarter of an hour later. Jane showed him up to Orion's room, and then everyone waited outside anxiously. Suzy held Julia's hand, reassuring her than Orion would be fine. Inside she was a bundle of nerves. Michael paced the hallway up and down, the nervous atmosphere affecting even him.
After what seemed like an eternity the doctor emerged from the room. Everyone held their breath - what would be the verdict?

The doctor nodded to the others. "He will be fine," he told them all calmly. "He's awake now, but I reccommend only one visitor at a time and not for too long. He needs to rest for at least a day before he should get up. The shock of the bullet gave him a nasty cut and a concussion, but nothing too bad."
Julia gave a little cry, then burst into tears, slipping away from Suzy and running for the door.

Suzy clapped a hand to her mouth in relief, almost bursting into tears herself. She caught sight of Orion through the open door and smiled happily. She turned to Jane, who was also smiling.
"That's a relief," Jane said, "Well, come on. Let's not crowd."

(Who's coming in besides Julie?)
Orion looked down at Julie from where he was propped against the headboard and smiled at her. "Julia, Julia, it's all fine." He reached out a big hand to her and she wrapped her own about it, snuggling in beside the bed and falling silent. He looked up at the door, feeling an itch along the side of his head where the doctor had stuck a wide cotten bandage.

(Doc said one visitor at a time ... well okay.)
Suzy hung back slightly, nervous for no apparant reason. She wanted to go in and see for herself that Orion was all right, but she didn't know if he would want her there or not. In the end, she was saved making the decision by the large presence of Lord Thomas who suddenly loomed up behind her.
Suzy nearly tripped over her own feet in her haste to cursty. "L-Lord Thomas ..."
"Papa!" Jane came over and hugged her father tightly, "The doctor said Mr. Talbot will be fine, but he needs to rest for a day or so. That will be fine, won't it Papa?"
"Certainly," Lord Thomas replied, "Is he awake?"
"Yes, Papa."
Thomas strode over and opened the door wider so he could see for himself their visitor. Talbot turned out to be a young man, in his early twenties, and handsome. Sat beside his bed was the little girl Jane had said was with him. Julia, if Thomas remembered correctly.
"Mr. Talbot," Thomas greeted him, "Good afternoon. I'm afraid you had quite the accident."

Orion's eyes twinkled with his cheerful, wry smile. "If that shot was an accident, I'd not want to meet the man when he's shooting delibarately," he replied to the strange man who stood in the doorway. He looked a bit like the Lady Jane, and he assumed the man was related to her. Perhaps her father.
He stroked Julia's hair as she turned huge, frightened eyes on him, then looked back up at his visitor. "Could you tell me where I am, sir?"

Thomas smiled back jovially. The man had a sense of humour; that was good. "Certainly, sir. You are at Meadowview House. Allow me to introduce myself - Thomas Edding, at your service. I believe you're acquainted with my daughter's maid, Susan Higgins?"

Orion didn't let his surprise show and simply nodded. "Pleased to meet you, sir. I do know the lady." He smiled. "She was chasing a hat, and I returned it to her."

"Yes. It was my late wife's, and we were most grateful that it was returned safely," Thomas nodded, "Well, Mr. Talbot, if there's anything we can get you, or that you need ...?"

Orion hesitated, then shook his head. "I'm most thankful for the bed and the care, sir."
He glanced down at Julia, his eyes concerned, but didn't speak.

"Very least I could do, Mr. Talbot," Thomas replied, "Now, the doctor says you need to rest for at least a day so you and your - daughter? will need to stay here for the night. No arguments now. Sure there's nothing you need? Food, drink?"

Orion smiled. "I would appreciate some water." He looked down at Julia as she cuddled in closer. "Julia is my niece."

"Yes, please, sir." Julia whispered, turning in the circle of Orion's arm to look up at Thomas.

"Right away, miss," Thomas smiled kindly and retreated from the room. Outside, he turned to Bessie and Suzy. "Bessie, would you make up a bed for Miss Julia for the night. And Suzy, please fetch Mr Talbot and his niece drinks."
"Yes, Lord Edding," Bessie and Suzy said together, curtseying.
Bessie made her way to the linen cupboard, while Suzy retreated back down the stairs to the kitchen. Once there, she found Adam with his outdoor shoes and hat still on, bent over the oven.
"Reckon whatever's in 'ere's done, Suze," he said as she came in, "Couldn't find yer Mr. Talbot to give 'im the letta from Lord Eddin' though."
"Oh, that'll be the cake Bessie and me made," Suzy answered, taking two glasses from one of the cabinets, "An' Mista Talbot's 'ere. 'E was in an accident up the road."
"And 'e was brought 'ere?" Adam asked.
"Lady Jane's friend, Miss Elizabeth, was wiv 'em." Suzy explained as she filled the glasses with cold water. She quickly recounted the morning's events to Adam, then made her way back up the stairs with the water.
Heart pounding nervously, Suzy pushed open the door with her foot and awkwardly curtseyed.
"'Ello again, Mr. Talbot," she said in a quiet voice, "Um, I 'eard you and Julia were thirsty."

Orion looked up and smiled at Suzy, his eyes warm and welcoming. "Hello, Miss Higgins. Thank you for bringing us some water."
