I find that a lot of people lie on thier hit points, especially with the larger hit dice classes ( i. e. Knight, Barbarian, Fighter) because they are the meat shields and HAVE to be able to take hits. When one of these people see they just rolled a 3 on a d12 you might find them slowly slide the dice back into their hand and reroll. To help combat the ridiculous curve in player HP versus Monster HP I implemented a rule where a players total hit points are equal to their max at first level. Then half of their hit dice + Con modifier at all even levels and half of their hit dice + 1 + Con Modifier on all odd levels. This isn't for everyone but keep in mind you still have an edge up on monsters since they are always just half. I restrain from this rule for some NPC's that I want to have slightly more or less HP but don't want to mess with their constitutions because that will mess with skills and fort save, nor do I want to mess with amount of hit dice because that screws up base attack bonus and base save calculation.
