$400 or less? hmmm. You can search local electronic stores for ones with mail-in money back thingys that end up being around there (depending on what you get). That's what I had to do.

Looking around locally helps more than you might think. (Though "local" for me was the next big town over, but hey, it worked.)
PLUS, often the cheaper ones are just like the more expensive but with a "bigger" name. That's not always the case, but sometimes a cheaper toshiba can be nearly the same thing as a compaq (sp?) that's a few hundred more.

You want to be careful though. You do not neccessarily want to just go out and buy the cheapest thing off the shelf from a company that has little to no known history. With computers when you break away from the known brands you're playing with the reliability of the system. A Compaq is more than likely 10x more reliable than a $300 Wal Mart special.

I just bought a laptop on ebay for $77.99 + sh&h so it turned out to be $101.78 total. It's old and probably won't break any speed records but I only want it so I can write away from this cursed corner without having to resort to longhand.
If I had paid a bit more (the $150 range + sh&h which seems to run about $40.) I could have picked up a Dell Latitude with Win XP on it. I need to get 2 laptops for $200 though so I'm more limited than that.
If you do this read the listing CAREFULLY and realize that you're taking a risk. Still, seller feedback means something.
Oh, expect to have to buy a battery, too, if you want one. Very few of the listed laptops have a functional battery.

Or you could try and win a competition like I did and get one free!
Hehe it's Toshiba and got Vista and stuff so it's pretty nifty!
