I'm going to add on Sara Douglass. I've been reading the Wayfarer Redemption series for a long time now (the last book has yet to come out) and I absolutely love it.
Also Anne McCaffrey
I second K.A. Applegate, the Eddings, and Tamora Pierce

I'll second Anne McCaffrey. I have some of her PERN books. Sara Douglass, eh? I've seen some of those books on Wayfarer redemption, but they never really got me interested. I'll look again.

I love Stephen King. He's a brilliant writer and sure his movies are questionable for the most part and his later work seems like he's meerly writing because he can. But if you can enjoy a book that takes you into a familar world and throws you into an enthralling adventure that twists your view on that around you and makes you question if all we know really is true. Take up some of his older works, one of my favorites by far is Salem's Lot. Don't watch the movie!! Especialy the new made for TV one with Rob Lowe. It is good, but read before you watch....

OMG! I totally second J.K Rowling. Harry Potter geek right here! I also love Tolkien, and Paolini (although i tend to get grief for that one) And there's no doubt that Anne McCaffrey is freakin awesome! A few others that I really like are Jane Austin (girls gotta love Pride and Prejudice), Terry Brooks, Harlan Coben, and a few others I cant think of right now... I'll add on later as they come to me!
